Wool Garment Care
To ensure the longevity of your merino wool garments, proper storage is essential to protect them from damage.
Some easy tips to remember:
- Fold knits and hang wovens
- Air garments after use to release any moisture or odour. You can also consider airing in a steamy bathroom for a refresh after wear or during travel.
- Always clean garments before storing away as food stains and body oils can attract moths
- Consider using airtight bags for an extra layer of protection or your Homestead Road bag.
How to wash your merino wool garments:
One of the benefits of merino wool clothing is that its naturally odour resistant. This means, you can wear more, and wash less. Please always check the care label inside your garment for recommended wash techniques. We have some fabrics that are machine washable (cool wash, wool cycle using a wool detergent) or more suitable for hand washing (cool hand wash using a wool detergent). Always lay flat in the shade to dry. Do not tumble dry.
How to prevent your wool clothes from pilling:
Pilling is natural process. It refers to the process of small balls of fibre that appear on the surface of your clothing.
Pilling forms as a result of normal wear and tear from things repeatedly rubbing against the garments (friction). It is not a sign of poor quality, instead is due to the shorter yarn length of merino wool fibres compared to synthetic, man-made fabrics.
To remove pilling:
- Use a fabric de-piller specifically designed for wool. Gently run it over the fabric surface to remove the pills. Take care not to cut the garment and avoid excess shaving as it can weaken the fabric over time.
